At San Rocco Cane Corso, health and nutrition go hand in hand. We prefer homegrown and reliable businesses that care about the product they are putting out. Often we read about commercial brands outsourcing and using inferior ingredients to increase their profits. I was tired of paying thousands to dog food companies that do not put the interests of dog health first.
Here is an example of the disregard for our dogs in the name of profit. Many dog food companies used Chinese wheat gluten that contained poison in their dog foods. First of all dogs should not consume wheat! Do you remember the Melamine recall from 2007? Many dogs were killed. Why were these companies using Chinese ingredients anyway? Cheaper food……. larger profits! Their were charges filed against these companies who knowingly broke the law against health and nutrition laws!
Here is some info and press releases from the recall. Recall affected Royal Canin, Blue Buffalo and Natures Balance, see link on FDA website. I understand some pet food companies make mistakes, however, but when we are dealing with the lives of our Dogs (you and me), I only trust a company who puts ingredients and health first and foremost. My dogs are important to me and are treated like family, so their loss can’t be replaced.
Here is a good trailer to that touches on the Melamine Poisoning, and can also show you why I do not deal with the big corporate machines behind the dog food empires who push GMO foods.
I feel when we support Pet supplement companies like NuVet as well as Life’s Abundance, we are sending a message that we demand better quality foods for our pets. Many dog foods on the shelves today are not species appropriate for Dogs. The necessary proteins are being replaced with legumes. In the past, I would often worry about fillers such as GMO’s, phytoestrogens and animal by-products. Personally, I stopped using Taste of the Wild, upon discovering there were just too many recalls from Diamond Pet Foods. I was looking for a food that was shipped fresh, so they don’t sit on store shelves, hot warehouses or on trucks for long periods of time. I read this would decrease the risk of rancid and toxic dog food. So after over a year of research we finally made the choice to switch to Life’s Abundance Dog Food.
We strive to feed our dogs closest to their heritage diet. As many of you may know, health and nutrition have a direct relationship. Being aware of what goes into your pet’s body is very important to their overall health. It’s a fact that Dogs are not meant to consume corn, soy, high amounts of legume proteins, or grains. In doing so, many breeds (including Corsos) “can” have wheat sensitivities which can lead to itchiness, shedding, and hot spots. That is the reason why we decided to make the switch to Life’s Abundance.
When considering the specific dietary needs of our breed, we had to make an important and educated choice in foods. Corsos are sensitive to various food allergies, so it’s very important that we save our clients and their pets from suffering the heartbreak of a below-par diet. A bad diet will plague family pets with numerous health issues. Top offenders are allergies and gastro intestinal issues.
Life’s Abundance was founded almost 20 years ago. Natural minded Veterinarian Dr. Jane Bicks is the pet product formulator. Life’s Abundance All Life Stage Dog Food also contains important pre and probiotics that aid in your dog’s overall gut health and digestion. These key ingredients, including several other needed vitamins, also support your dog’s overall immune system. This food is one of only two I know of that have never had a recall, nor degraded themselves to using the latest cheap ingredients as so many other premium kibbles have. We have read great things about their warehouse storage facilities that are strict with climate control rules for better freshness.
The excerpt below is taken from Life’s Abundance website:
“At Life’s Abundance, we make healthy living easier with products that are inspired by nature and informed by science. With a focus on safety, it is our commitment to use as many natural ingredients as possible, to ensure our product’s quality and efficacy, and to back it up with first-class customer service.”
In my opinion this is the best dog food and is reasonably priced when compared to other premium dog foods in its class. They do not just claim to be another health and nutrition based dog food, they actually deliver. I would be buying this food even if it was more expensive, because its worth it! Since this breed has a large appetite it only helps that it’s reasonably priced.
Here is the comparison table to show the price per day is significantly less than other comparable brands.

I will sometimes add a can to kibble to provide for more nutrition and a more diverse diet for my Cane Corsos. I use one Can of Pork & Venison per bowl of kibble, since I find they like this flavor the best.
Its cost effective and the dogs and pups love it!
